It was established in 1998.
UMSL is closely and structurally linked to U.M. Association Ltd. (UMAL), a not-for-profit mutual association providing cover for specified risks presented in its Member Organisations and related services. In addition, the company provides management services to U.M. Association (Special Risks) Ltd. through a contract.
UMSL is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority, register number 311567. It operates as a General Insurance Broker in this respect.
As an intermediary and mutual management services provider specialising in Higher Education Sector risks, UMSL aims to provide clients with access to insurance at the best terms available, and to offer comprehensive high value management support services.
The company aims to minimise the costs of providing services to the Associations, and does not operate to make excess profit. Any profits beyond those necessary to operate the company are returned to Members through the two Associations.
Engagement with Members of the Associations to understand their needs, to interpret the ever-changing insurance market and to manage effective procurement of excess insurance is key to developing the value offered.
